Networking for Cloud 2.0: Lumen NaaS, Fabric, and the Economics of On-Demand Connectivity

A five-year TCO analysis of bandwidth-on-demand services and Fabric POP architecture for the AI era

Artificial intelligence, cloud-native applications and distributed data centers are rewriting the rules of enterprise networking. Cloud 2.0 traffic is bursty, moves massive volumes between data centers, and grows faster than any WAN was planned for. Yet most enterprises still buy VPN, Ethernet, Internet and MPLS services sized for peak demand, leaving half or more of the purchased capacity idle for most of the day.

This paper examines Lumen's Network-as-a-Service portfolio, including IP VPN On-Demand, Ethernet Fabric Connect, Intelligent Internet and Wavelength Services, together with the Fabric POP architecture that replaces manually provisioned Meet-Me Rooms with a single programmable interconnection platform. To quantify the economics, ACG Research built a five-year total cost of ownership model comparing traditional fixed-bandwidth services with Lumen's bandwidth-on-demand offerings.

The results are significant. On-demand Ethernet, Internet and VPN services reduce five-year TCO by 33% to 35% against their fixed-bandwidth equivalents, and Lumen IP VPN On-Demand costs 83% less than legacy MPLS. At high bandwidth levels, wavelength services prove more cost-effective than scaling 100G Carrier Ethernet. Combined with Fabric POPs that provision services in minutes and consolidate cloud on-ramps, optical transport and IP services onto a shared fabric, the analysis shows how enterprises can cut both capital and operating expense while gaining the agility that AI and Cloud 2.0 workloads demand.
